Joint Initiative Enhances Sustainability and Environmental Commitment

KOTA SAMARAHAN, SARAWAK — In a concerted effort to bolster environmental conservation, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) and Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) have joined forces to plant 1,000 trees in and around the UNIMAS campus. This initiative marks a significant step towards enhancing green spaces and promoting sustainable practices within the community.

Greening Malaysia Programme: A Three-Phase Planting Project

The tree-planting project, conducted in three phases on May 15, May 29, and June 12, saw the participation of 428 individuals. This collaborative effort included 50 SEB staff members, alongside UNIMAS faculty and students from various departments.

Diverse Tree Species Enrich Campus Environment

The initiative featured the planting of three main tree species—Bucida, Eugenia Oleina, Tecoma, and Causarina—selected for their environmental benefits and suitability to the local climate. These trees were strategically planted near key campus landmarks such as DeTAR Putra, Pusat Islam Tun Abang Salahuddin, and the UNIMAS Sports Centre, among others.

Commitment to Sustainability and Climate Action

Dr. Mahsuri Yusof, project leader from the Faculty of Engineering, emphasized the project’s alignment with SEB’s tree planting and habitat restoration initiatives. This collaborative effort also supports UNIMAS’s ambitious Low Carbon Campus 2030 initiative, aimed at reducing carbon footprints and enhancing environmental sustainability.

Dr. Kiu Miin Fung, representing SEB’s Research and Development Department, highlighted SEB’s commitment to environmental stewardship by donating the trees as part of their broader sustainability efforts.

UNIMAS Publisher’s Contribution to Environmental Conservation

Malia Taibi, director of UNIMAS Publisher, underscored the publisher’s commitment to sustainability by linking tree planting to their publishing activities. For every book published, UNIMAS Publisher pledges to plant a tree, thus offsetting the environmental impact of their operations and promoting sustainable practices in the publishing industry.

UNIMAS and SEB Plant 1,000 Trees as Part of Their ‘Greening Efforts’

The joint effort between UNIMAS and SEB not only enhances the campus environment but also sets a precedent for corporate-academic collaboration in environmental conservation. By fostering green spaces and promoting biodiversity, this initiative contributes significantly to mitigating climate change and improving air quality.
