The operation took place early on Sunday, July 7, starting at 12:30 am. Six officers and 36 members of the Kuching Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division participated in the sting operation along Jalan Tun Datuk Patinggi Haji Abdul Rahman Yakub. The primary aim was to curb the rising menace of illegal street racing and dangerous stunts performed by young motorcyclists.
Arrests and Charges
Kuching police chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah revealed that the arrested teenagers, aged between 15 and 18, were involved in performing perilous stunts on their motorcycles. These actions not only endangered their lives but also posed a significant risk to other road users.
“All six, aged between 15 and 18, were arrested and taken to the Kuching police headquarters (IPD) for further action,” said ACP Ahsmon.
The case is being investigated under Section 42 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. This section provides for fines up to RM15,000, imprisonment for up to five years, and disqualification of the offender’s driving license for up to five years.
Seizure and Inspection
Confiscated Motorcycles
In addition to the arrests, police confiscated 53 motorcycles under Section 60 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1978. These motorcycles were seized for various modification offences, including alterations that could potentially enhance their speed and maneuverability, thereby making them more dangerous on the roads.
Extensive Inspections and Summonses
During the operation, the enforcement team inspected a total of 365 motorcycles. This thorough inspection led to the issuance of 384 traffic summonses for various offences. The infractions included:
- Modified vehicle structure and exhaust systems: 69 summonses
- Licence plates not according to regulations: 59 summonses
- No side mirrors: 52 summonses
- Expired road taxes: 36 summonses
- Riding without valid licences: 34 summonses
