Three Separate Motorcycle Collisions Result in Fatalities and Severe Injuries
MIRI, July 24 — A series of tragic accidents involving sedans and motorcycles has led to the deaths of three motorcyclists and left another severely injured in Miri. The incidents occurred between Monday evening and Tuesday morning, highlighting ongoing concerns about road safety in the region.
First Collision: Fatal Crash at Jalan Kuala Baram
The first of these tragic accidents took place at approximately 8:30 PM on Monday at Jalan Kuala Baram. According to District Police Chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu, a 49-year-old man was driving a sedan from Emart Tudan towards Kuala Baram when the collision occurred.
“The motorcyclist, a 26-year-old man, was traveling behind the sedan when he crashed into the rear of the vehicle,” ACP Chabu explained. “The impact was severe, resulting in the immediate death of the motorcyclist.”
The motorcycle and the rear of the sedan were extensively damaged in the collision. The exact cause of the accident remains under investigation, but initial reports suggest that the motorcyclist may have failed to maintain a safe distance from the car.
Second Collision: Head-On Impact at Jalan Pujut Padang Kerbau
Less than three hours later, another accident occurred at Jalan Pujut Padang Kerbau around 11:30 PM. This collision involved a sedan and a motorcycle, resulting in the death of the motorcyclist, a 27-year-old man.
“The motorcyclist lost control of his vehicle and veered into the opposite lane, causing a head-on collision with the sedan,” ACP Chabu detailed. “The motorcyclist died at the scene due to the severity of his injuries.”
Remarkably, the driver of the sedan was unharmed in this incident. The circumstances surrounding this crash are still being investigated, including factors such as road conditions and the motorcyclist’s state at the time of the accident.
Third Collision: Fatal Crash Involving a Teenager at Jalan Lusut
The third accident occurred at 5:55 AM on Tuesday at Jalan Lusut. A 37-year-old man was driving a sedan towards SMK Luar Bandar when his vehicle collided with a motorcycle ridden by a 15-year-old teenager.
“The teenager lost control of his motorcycle and veered into the opposite lane, leading to a fatal crash,” ACP Chabu reported. “The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, and his 13-year-old pillion rider sustained severe injuries.”
The injured pillion rider was swiftly transported to Miri Hospital for medical treatment, while the driver of the sedan escaped the accident without injury. The cause of this accident is also under investigation.
Ongoing Investigations
All three accidents are currently under investigation by the local authorities. “The cases are being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987,” ACP Chabu confirmed. This section pertains to reckless or negligent driving causing death or injury.
The series of accidents underscores the urgent need for heightened road safety measures and public awareness campaigns. Motorcyclists, in particular, face significant risks on the roads, and both drivers and riders must exercise greater caution to prevent such tragedies.
Call for Road Safety Awareness
The Miri community is urged to remain vigilant and adhere to traffic regulations to ensure safer roads for all. The recent spate of accidents serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of unsafe driving practices.
