Thousands Brave the Rain to Join MBKS Mayor’s Walk 2024.
A Record-Breaking Turnout Despite the Downpour
KUCHING, Aug 18, 2024 — The skies may have opened up, but that did little to dampen the spirits of thousands of fitness enthusiasts who participated in the Mayor’s Walk 2024. Organized by the Kuching City South Council (MBKS), this annual event saw a record-breaking number of participants, proving that rain is no match for community spirit and a shared commitment to health and fitness.
A Growing Tradition of Fitness and Community
The Mayor’s Walk has become a much-anticipated event in Kuching, growing in popularity each year. This year’s edition, which took place today at the MBKS Boulevard, was flagged off by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr. Sim Kui Hian. According to MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, the event has experienced significant growth since its inception.
“This event has grown from just a few thousand participants in its early days to tens of thousands now,” said Mayor Wee, highlighting the increasing enthusiasm and participation from the community. “This year’s turnout, despite the heavy rain, is a testament to the community’s commitment to health and fitness.”
Mayor’s Walk: A Highlight of Kuching’s Annual Calendar
The Mayor’s Walk 2024 marked the conclusion of the Kuching Food Festival, another highlight of the city’s annual calendar. The walk has traditionally served as a closing event, bringing the community together in a celebration of health, wellness, and unity. Participants of all ages, from children to senior citizens, turned out in droves, braving the downpour to take part in this community-driven initiative.
A Challenge Embraced by Many
Mayor Wee expressed his heartfelt gratitude to everyone who attended and supported the event, emphasizing the significance of the community’s role in its success.
“As mayor, this is a challenge for me, and with the people’s support, I must do better,” he said. “I want to thank all residents from Kuching, whether from under the jurisdiction of MBKS or Kuching North City Commission (DBKU), who participated in the walk for their confidence and commitment to the councils.”
A Record-Breaking Year
This year, the Mayor’s Walk recorded an unprecedented number of participants, with more than 10,000 people taking part in the event. The enthusiasm and energy were palpable as the walkers, undeterred by the rain, embarked on the walk through the city, turning the streets into a sea of umbrellas and raincoats.
MBKS Deputy Mayor Dato Zaiedi Suhaili and Kuching Food Festival 2024 Organising Chairman, Councillor Mok Chuang Ping, were also present, lending their support to the event. Their presence underscored the significance of the Mayor’s Walk as a symbol of community solidarity and the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
The Importance of Exercise for Good Health
Mayor Wee reiterated the primary purpose of the Mayor’s Walk: to raise awareness of the importance of regular exercise for maintaining good health.
“The Mayor’s Walk is not just a physical activity; it’s a reminder to everyone about the importance of staying active and healthy,” said Mayor Wee. “It’s about encouraging our community to embrace fitness as a part of daily life.”
Looking Forward to Next Year
As the Mayor’s Walk 2024 came to a close, participants were already looking forward to next year’s event. The overwhelming success of this year’s walk, despite the challenging weather, has set a high bar for future events.
The spirit of unity and determination displayed by the thousands who attended has not only made the Mayor’s Walk 2024 a memorable occasion but also a beacon of what can be achieved when a community comes together for a common cause.
