SYDNEY – Sarawak is redefining its identity on the global stage, transitioning from its traditional extractive industries to becoming a beacon of sustainability and green growth. At the Australia-Asean Business Forum 2024, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg showcased how Sarawak is setting new standards for sustainability in ASEAN and beyond.

In his keynote address, Premier Abang Johari emphasized Sarawak’s unique position at the intersection of rich cultural heritage and modern innovation. “Sarawak stands at a crucial juncture where we must decouple gross domestic product (GDP) growth from unsustainable energy and resource consumption,” he explained. This pivotal moment requires Sarawak to adopt green policies to drive a meaningful transition.
Sarawak’s commitment to sustainable growth is encapsulated in its Green Economy Policy, which targets three primary objectives:
- Safeguarding Biodiversity and Natural Resources: Protecting the state’s unique ecosystems and cultural heritage.
- Enhancing Quality of Life: Improving living standards for all Sarawakians while respecting indigenous cultures.
- Fostering Inclusive Growth: Promoting economic expansion that avoids overconsumption of resources and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
Transformative Journey Towards Sustainability
Abang Johari highlighted that Sarawak’s Green Economy Policy is more than just a set of goals; it represents a transformative journey. This policy integrates aspects such as policy-making, governance, and development to drive substantial change. Sarawak’s advancements in Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS) and ambitious renewable energy goals are prime examples of the state’s leadership in regional green transition efforts.
“We cannot do this alone,” said Abang Johari. He called for strengthened partnerships between Australia and ASEAN to foster innovation and economic collaboration. “Let us continue to innovate, collaborate, and strive towards a more sustainable and prosperous future for Sarawak, ASEAN, Australia, and beyond.”

Abang Johari also took the opportunity to congratulate the organizing committee of the Australia-Asean Business Forum 2024. He praised their efforts in orchestrating a successful event, marking a significant milestone in the 50-year history of collaboration between Australia and ASEAN.
“Your tireless efforts in bringing together this dynamic and influential gathering are truly commendable,” he said. The forum, held under the theme “New Direction with New Opportunities,” served as a platform to address crucial topics ranging from agriculture and food security to renewable energy and decarbonization.
