Kuching Prepares for Cultural Extravaganza as Streets Near Waterfront Close

KUCHING (Sept 11): The bustling streets surrounding Kuching Waterfront will experience temporary closures this weekend in celebration of the highly anticipated 39th National Chinese Cultural Festival. From September 14 to 15, several key roads will be blocked off to accommodate the various festivities scheduled throughout the weekend.

Affected Areas and Traffic Adjustments

According to the latest press release from the festival organizers, the road closures will affect several major streets in the area. Specifically, Gambier Street, Court House Street, the section in front of the Old Court House, Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg, Main Bazaar, and the Merdeka Plaza exit at the Waterfront will be closed from 4pm to 10pm on both days.

During the daytime hours, only one lane of the road in front of the Old Court House will remain open to traffic. This temporary measure is intended to help manage the expected influx of visitors while minimizing disruption to local businesses and residents.

“We urge all road users to plan their journeys accordingly and avoid the affected areas during the festival times. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate the public’s understanding and cooperation,” said the press release.

Festival Highlights and Activities

The 39th National Chinese Cultural Festival promises a vibrant array of activities that celebrate traditional and contemporary Chinese culture. The festivities will commence on September 12 with a grand torch relay, which will journey from Serian to Samarahan and culminate in Kuching. This ceremonial event marks the beginning of a weekend filled with cultural displays and performances.

A highlight of the festival will be the setup of a large stage in front of the Old Court Clock Tower at the Waterfront Park. This stage will host a creative lantern parade competition, cultural performances, and the closing ceremony of the festival. The main events are scheduled to begin at 5pm on Sunday, September 15.

In addition to the main stage events, the festival will also feature colourful cultural celebrations around Carpenter Street. Attendees can look forward to lantern-making contests held at the Feng Shan Temple Theatre and mooncake-making demonstrations at the Waterfront.
