KUCHING, 12-September: Alvin Heng, a well-known yoga instructor from Kuching, Sarawak, recently made headlines by achieving a remarkable 4th place in the Junior Men Single category at the Fitness Yoga Classic Competition held in Xishuangbanna, China. This event marks a significant milestone for Heng, as it was his first foray into international yoga competitions. His participation not only highlights his dedication to the practice but also brings recognition to Sarawak’s growing prominence in the global yoga community.
An Eye-Opening Experience: Alvin Heng’s First International Yoga Competition
A New Perspective on Yoga
For Heng, competing in Xishuangbanna was a groundbreaking experience. “It was definitely an eye-opener for me and all of us from Malaysia!” Heng shared. This was the Malaysian team’s debut in such a high-profile event, and Heng was eager to embrace the opportunity. Despite his belief that yoga should not be viewed as a competitive sport, he found the experience immensely valuable. “To be there and see the whole event was a great experience,” he noted.
Atmosphere at the Fitness Yoga Festival
The Yoga Festival in Xishuangbanna, now in its second year, offered a unique atmosphere. Heng described the event as distinct from typical yoga competitions. “Although it was a yoga competition, it didn’t feel that way. Participants were not competitive with one another. Instead, we showcased our best poses to the judges within the given time frame of 2 minutes for individual and 3 minutes for group participation,” he explained. The camaraderie and mutual respect among participants created a supportive environment, contributing to a memorable experience.
Memorable Moments and Preparation Insights
Opening Performance and Personal Highlights
One of the highlights of the event was the Malaysian team’s opening performance, which was well-received by the audience. Heng expressed his surprise and delight at being announced 4th place in the Men Junior Category. “Being in the yoga competition itself was an experience I never anticipated. Winning 4th place was a pleasant bonus,” he remarked.
Preparation for the Competition
Heng’s preparation for the Fitness Yoga Classic was rigorous. “Practice and keep practicing!” he emphasized. Maintaining a healthy diet was also crucial, especially for the opening performance where he had to appear shirtless. Despite some challenges, such as understanding Mandarin terms and regulations, Heng managed to navigate these hurdles with the help of friends and translation tools.
Reflections on Performance and Future Plans
Performance Evaluation and Challenges
Heng felt positive about his performance, despite the limited 2-minute timeframe. “There were so many poses I wanted to showcase, but I had to make the most of the time given. I managed to flow with the music and end right on time,” he said. The routine, which included six essential poses, was well-received for its smooth transitions and synchronization with the music.
Impact on Career and Future Endeavors
While Heng views the 4th place achievement as a small milestone, he acknowledges its role in boosting his self-confidence. “Winning 4th place is an accomplishment, but it doesn’t change much in terms of my career progression. Our growth is based on our teaching knowledge and practices,” he explained. Looking ahead, Heng does not have immediate plans for future competitions but remains open to opportunities. His teacher has set a goal for him to aim for the top 3 next year, and Heng continues to organize master classes and training sessions with instructors from West Malaysia.
Inspiring Words for Students and Followers
A Message of Self-Improvement
In sharing a message with his students and followers, Heng conveyed a philosophy of self-improvement and focus. “If you spend your time chasing butterflies, they’ll fly away. But if you spend your time making a beautiful garden, the butterflies will come to you,” he advised. Heng encourages individuals to focus on personal growth, believing that true success comes from who we are, rather than what we seek.
