KUCHING (Sept 20): The bilateral relationship between Indonesia and Sarawak is set to strengthen as Indonesia transitions its capital to Nusantara in East Kalimantan, said Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. This strategic move is expected to enhance cooperation across various sectors, particularly in the areas of economy, socio-cultural exchange, and citizen services.
Strengthening Ties Through Collaboration
Abang Johari highlighted the longstanding brotherhood and mutual understanding between Malaysia, especially Sarawak, and Indonesia. The Premier emphasised the importance of preserving these strong ties, which are built on mutual respect, shared cultural values, and cooperation. The Premier said, “As the next generation, it is our duty to preserve the sustainability of this relationship, built on mutual respect, cooperation, and shared cultural values. Together, we strive to continue fostering peace, prosperity, and ongoing development in the region.”
New Opportunities with Nusantara’s Relocation
With the capital shift to Nusantara, Sarawak and Indonesia now find themselves immediate neighbours, opening up a wealth of opportunities for deeper collaboration. Abang Johari expressed optimism about the flourishing bilateral cooperation, particularly in supporting Sarawak’s Community Learning Centres (CLC) in plantations and enhancing socio-cultural exchanges.
“We hope bilateral cooperation between Indonesia and Sarawak will continue to flourish across various potential sectors, including the economy, socio-cultural exchange, and citizen services or protection, particularly in supporting our children at the Community Learning Centres (CLC) in Sarawak’s plantations,” the Premier added.
He pointed out that the relocation of Indonesia’s capital brings Sarawak and East Kalimantan even closer, making it a perfect opportunity to further develop regional partnerships.
Celebrating Indonesia’s Progress
Speaking at the Diplomatic Reception in Commemoration of the 79th Anniversary of Indonesia’s Independence Day, the Premier congratulated Indonesia on its significant milestone. Representing him at the event was Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah, who extended Abang Johari’s message of friendship and continued cooperation.

Abang Johari lauded Indonesia’s achievements under the theme of this year’s celebration, ‘Nusantara Baru, Indonesia Maju’. He noted that this theme signifies the monumental changes taking place in Indonesia, particularly the relocation of the capital and leadership transitions. He added, “This 79th-anniversary celebration holds deep significance not only for the people of Indonesia but for the entire region, which continues to witness Indonesia’s progress.”
The Premier also emphasised that Indonesia’s forward-looking vision of Indonesia Emas 2045—an aspiration for a more advanced and sustainable future—aligns closely with Sarawak’s ambitions for regional development and cooperation.
