KUCHING: In a significant move to enhance connectivity for Sarawak, AirAsia has agreed to increase its flight frequency following the recent reduction by the Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG). Sarawak’s Transport Minister, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, announced the agreement after a meeting with AirAsia’s Director of Sarawak Affairs, Hamdan Mohamad, on Wednesday, September 25.
The decision comes as a direct response to MAG’s substantial flight cuts affecting routes served by its subsidiaries, Malaysia Airlines, Firefly, and Amal, which have created challenges for air travel in Sarawak. “I am pleased that AirAsia has taken positive measures to increase flights to meet the needs of the Sarawak market,” said Lee in a statement on Thursday, September 26.
Starting from December 20, AirAsia will operate a daily service using a wide-body Airbus A330, accommodating 377 passengers, between Kuala Lumpur and Kuching. This increase will be in place until January 6 and then again from January 17 to February 10 to cater to the expected surge in passenger demand during the festive season.
Lee highlighted that the number of flights on Sarawak routes has seen fluctuations, with 359 weekly flights recorded in August. This figure rose to 364 in September but will dip slightly to 356 in October due to the off-season. However, the airline plans to ramp up operations again, projecting 384 flights in November and 406 in December.
The Airbus A330, known for its capacity and efficiency, is typically utilized by AirAsia for longer international routes to destinations like Dubai, Sydney, and Seoul. In addressing the high airfares that have troubled Sarawakians, Lee urged AirAsia to consider implementing a ceiling price policy for flight fares within Sarawak and between Sarawak and West Malaysia.
Moreover, discussions are ongoing with Malaysia Airlines and Batik Air to address air travel concerns in the region. The Ministry remains committed to ensuring that the air travel needs of Sarawakians are met efficiently.
