KUCHING (Oct 9): Sarawak is gearing up to host its inaugural Sarawak Open International Dragon & Lion Dance Cup 2024, a prestigious event expected to significantly boost local tourism. The competition, scheduled for October 26 and 27, is set to welcome teams and spectators from around the world, further establishing Sarawak as a top destination for cultural and sporting events in Malaysia.
State Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah announced the event at a press conference, noting that this landmark competition will be yet another milestone for Sarawak following the success of the recent Malaysia Games (SUKMA) and the International Dragon Boat Race. These events have proven to be invaluable in promoting Sarawak’s vibrant cultural heritage, drawing tourists, and stimulating the local economy.
A Global Gathering of Dragon and Lion Dance Teams
The Sarawak Open International Dragon & Lion Dance Cup will bring together over 40 teams from Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, and China. Organised by the Chinese Martial Art Association (CMAA) and sanctioned by the Dragon & Lion Dances Federation of Malaysia, the competition promises to be a cultural spectacle featuring four categories: Traditional Southern Lion Dance, High Pole Southern Lion Dance, Northern Lion Dance, and Luminous Dragon Dance.
“This event marks the first time Sarawak is hosting an international dragon and lion dance competition of this scale,” said Abdul Karim. “It reflects our commitment to nurturing cultural pride and inclusivity, showcasing Sarawak’s diversity on a grand stage. We welcome all enthusiasts and visitors to enjoy the free admission event,” he added.
The Minister also highlighted how the lion dance, traditionally rooted in Chinese culture, has evolved into a symbol of cultural unity in Sarawak. Practitioners from various ethnic groups, including Iban, Bidayuh, Malays, Melanau, and Orang Ulu, actively participate in lion dance events, demonstrating a deep respect and appreciation for each other’s cultural heritage.
A Boost for Local Tourism and Cultural Appreciation
Hosting the Dragon & Lion Dance Cup is expected to generate positive economic spin-offs, benefiting local businesses, hotels, and restaurants as visitors flock to Kuching. According to Abdul Karim, events of this magnitude attract not only domestic tourists but also international visitors, strengthening Sarawak’s reputation as a key cultural and sporting hub in the region.
“Events like this allow Sarawak to stand out as a destination that offers more than just natural beauty. Our vibrant, multicultural society is a big part of our appeal. Through the Dragon & Lion Dance Cup, we are able to showcase our cultural heritage and attract a global audience,” he said.
The cultural event is aligned with the state government’s efforts to promote sports tourism. Beyond entertainment, the Dragon & Lion Dance Cup aims to instill a sense of pride and participation in the performing arts, heritage, and sports among local communities.
Sarawak’s Rich Cultural Tapestry on Display
The lion dance in Sarawak today transcends its origins and has become an inclusive celebration of Sarawak’s multicultural society. Abdul Karim pointed out that the cross-cultural participation in lion dance events demonstrates mutual respect and appreciation that defines Sarawak’s spirit. The lion dance is now embraced by multiple communities, transforming it into a collective expression of Sarawak’s shared cultural identity.
“Involving diverse communities in lion dance performances has expanded its cultural significance, making it more than just a celebration of Chinese heritage but also a broader display of Sarawak’s unique cultural unity,” he said.
CMAA President Chester Lim also expressed enthusiasm about the event, inviting residents and tourists alike to witness the spectacular performances. “We encourage everyone in Kuching and surrounding areas to join us in celebrating this unique event. CMAA is committed to organising more such events to promote martial arts and cultural appreciation,” he said.
Upcoming Events Adding to Sarawak’s Appeal
The International Dragon & Lion Dance Cup 2024 is part of a series of cultural and sporting events that Sarawak has successfully hosted. These include the International Dragon Boat Race, which will take place later in October, and the recently concluded SUKMA and Para SUKMA games. Each of these events not only celebrates sportsmanship but also strengthens Sarawak’s cultural tourism sector.
Also present at the press conference were Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Datuk Snowdan Lawan and the Ministry’s Deputy Permanent Secretary Desmond Jerukan. Together, they underscored the government’s ongoing commitment to promoting Sarawak’s rich cultural heritage and positioning the state as a leading destination for international events.
