KUCHING, Oct 19 — In a significant development for Sarawak’s infrastructure landscape, Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, confirmed that all major upcoming bridges in the state will remain toll-free. This decision aligns with the late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem’s steadfast vision that Sarawak would not impose toll charges on its people. The Premier underscored that this principle is based on a poignant statement made by Adenan, who noted that adding ‘ol’ to ‘toll’ results in ‘tolol’, a term that translates to ‘foolish’ in English.
During his speech at the Sarawak Agenda town hall, part of the annual Lan Berambeh event held at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) in Kuala Lumpur, the Premier assured that these bridges are currently being constructed and are funded entirely by the Sarawak government. The event, which was broadcast live on the Ukas Channel, saw the Premier address an audience of Sarawakian sons and daughters, updating them on key infrastructure projects that will improve connectivity and enhance the quality of life in the state.
Major Bridges on Track for Completion
Abang Johari took the opportunity to remind the audience that some of the projects that were previously cancelled by the federal government are now being revived under Sarawak’s state budget. He highlighted that these bridges are crucial for Sarawak’s connectivity, with the Sarawak government taking full responsibility for their funding and execution.
“The projects are in various stages of implementation, with some near completion and others progressing well. Infrastructure such as roads, water supply, electricity, and telecommunications is a key priority in our development agenda for Sarawak,” he stated.
Among the notable projects is the Marudi Bridge, a RM116.5 million project set to link Marudi to Miri, which is scheduled for completion by the end of this year. Another significant development is the Kemena Bridge, which will connect Bintulu and Jepak, costing RM467 million. The Premier playfully compared the Kemena Bridge to the famous San Francisco Bridge, noting that Sarawakians won’t have to pay tolls for using it — a comment that was met with enthusiastic cheers and applause from the audience.

A Historic Transformation
Under Abang Johari’s leadership, Sarawak is witnessing a historic transformation with the construction of 12 major bridges, a collective investment of RM4 billion. One of the most highly anticipated projects is the Batang Lupar Bridge. At 4.8 kilometres, it will be the longest river-crossing bridge in Malaysia, with an estimated cost of RM848 million. Set for completion in 2025, this bridge will play a crucial role in enhancing transportation across the state.
“These bridges are part of Sarawak’s goal to improve infrastructure without burdening the people. Once completed, all these bridges will be toll-free, ensuring smoother and more affordable travel across the state. Unlike Peninsular Malaysia, where toll charges are a common feature, Sarawak remains committed to keeping travel toll-free,” Abang Johari reiterated.
A Broader Development Agenda
In addition to bridge construction, the Sarawak government is also addressing the issue of ageing water supply infrastructure. Abang Johari announced that the state would be investing RM1.03 billion to upgrade water supply systems, focusing on replacing old and leaking pipes.
“We are introducing artificial intelligence (AI) technology into the system, enabling real-time monitoring and improving the efficiency of our water supply. This initiative will allow us to better manage water distribution and address any issues promptly,” he explained.
The Premier’s speech at the Sarawak Agenda town hall highlighted the state’s commitment to infrastructure development, which is critical for Sarawak’s growth and connectivity.
