KUCHING, Nov 22: Construction on the much-anticipated 6.2-kilometre (km) access road to the southern side of Kuching International Airport (KIA) is progressing steadily, reaching 82% completion. The RM112.9 million project is expected to be fully operational by June 28, 2025.
Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap expressed satisfaction with the project’s progress, noting that it is currently ahead of schedule. He highlighted the importance of the new road in easing traffic congestion and enhancing connectivity in the area.
“This road will significantly benefit motorists from Kota Sentosa and surrounding regions, including Samarahan and Serian divisions. It also serves as an alternative route, reflecting the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government’s commitment to infrastructure development in Kota Sentosa,” said Yap in a statement following a site visit and briefing on Nov 21.
The Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) and Reka Ikhtiar Sdn Bhd, the project’s contractor, provided updates on the construction scope during the visit. Key features of the project include:
- A new four-lane, two-way road connecting Stutong T-Junction, Stampin T-Junction, and Bukit Berangan T-Junction.
- A two-lane, two-way road linking Stampin T-Junction and Sungai Tapang T-Junction.
- Upgrades to the D-type road at Stutong T-Junction.
- Construction of three reinforced concrete bridges crossing Sungai Kuap and Sungai Sangkoh.
Once completed, the new access road is expected to alleviate traffic congestion and improve travel efficiency for daily commuters and airport users. The development underscores the GPS government’s dedication to enhancing infrastructure in key areas of Sarawak.
