KUCHING: The newly appointed Director of the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), Jamri Masran, has pledged to continue the department’s high standards while embracing modern advancements.

Jamri, who officially assumed his role on November 19, previously served as Commander of the Perak Fire and Rescue Force. His connection to Sarawak runs deep, as his wife hails from the state, making it feel like home.

“My expectations are not too high because Sarawak Bomba is already one of the best in Malaysia. Where improvements are needed, we will address them, but the momentum here is already strong,” he stated during a press conference after the handing-over-of-duties ceremony at the Bomba Headquarters yesterday.

Focus on Technology and Collaboration

Jamri highlighted plans to integrate new technologies, such as drones, to boost the department’s capabilities. Currently, Sarawak Bomba does not have its own drones, but Jamri aims to bridge the gap through partnerships with non-governmental organisations and volunteer firefighting units.

“We’re targeting government approval for dedicated drone technology by 2026. Given Sarawak’s size compared to Peninsular Malaysia, specialised equipment is critical for comprehensive coverage,” he explained.

Ensuring Safety Amidst Development

With Sarawak’s rapid urbanisation and infrastructure growth, including hydroelectric and hydrogen energy projects, Jamri stressed the importance of embedding fire safety measures into all development plans.

“Fire safety will be integrated into infrastructure designs to ensure public safety as Sarawak continues its progress,” he added.

Jamri also highlighted the department’s dual role in managing both rescue operations and fire prevention, promising a holistic approach.

“Our goal is to maintain Sarawak Bomba’s excellence while introducing innovative solutions and fostering stronger community ties,” he said.
