KUCHING, Dec 11 – A 3.9-metre-long crocodile was successfully captured today by the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) in Kampung Semariang Batu during a targeted crocodile removal operation along the Sarawak River.
The operation, conducted by the SFC SWAT team, is part of efforts to maintain the Sarawak River’s status as a designated ‘Croc-Free Zone.’ The crocodile, lured by bait set up by the team, was found deceased upon capture, according to a report by TVS.
The crocodile removal operation, which runs from Dec 10 to 17, 2024, was initiated following a surge in public complaints about frequent crocodile sightings in the area.
In a statement, SFC emphasised the importance of the operation in ensuring public safety. “This operation was launched in response to community concerns. One crocodile has been captured, though it was already dead,” the statement revealed.
The operation involved strategic methods, including baited hooks and, when necessary, the use of firearms to ensure efficiency and safety.
SFC has urged residents in affected areas to cooperate fully with the SWAT team during the operation. “Community support is crucial to the success and safety of this mission,” the statement added.
Crocodile sightings along the Sarawak River have raised alarm among local residents, with the operation aimed at reducing the population of these reptiles in high-risk zones.
As SFC continues its week-long mission, the organisation remains committed to addressing human-wildlife conflict while prioritising public safety.
