Abang Johari Celebrates Shell’s Ongoing Partnership with Sarawak at Opening of One Shell Square Miri
MIRI, Oct 10 – Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg commended Shell Malaysia for its steadfast commitment as a “strong, reliable partner” in Sarawak’s development, during the grand opening of Sarawak Shell Berhad’s (SSB) new 13-storey headquarters, One Shell Square Miri (OSSM), last night.
The multinational company’s presence in Sarawak, spanning over a century since 1910, has not only contributed to the state’s economic growth but has also transformed Miri into a thriving city known for its pivotal role in Malaysia’s oil and gas sector.
“Shell has been a remarkable partner in Sarawak’s journey to progress,” said Abang Johari. “Together with the government, Shell has played an instrumental role in Miri’s transformation from a small village to a modern city. Their sustained presence is a testament to their commitment to Sarawak’s future.”
OSSM is more than just a new headquarters; it is an icon of modern Miri and symbolizes the next chapter of Sarawak’s sustainable development. Featuring a state-of-the-art working environment, the building is designed to reflect the values and ambitions of Sarawak as it enters a new era in energy production and environmental sustainability.
A Vision for Green Energy Collaboration with Shell
The Premier emphasized the importance of pursuing growth in Sarawak’s green energy sector. He called on Shell to further invest in initiatives such as carbon capture, usage, and storage (CCUS), which are crucial for sustainable energy production.
“Green technology is where the future lies, and I encourage Shell to collaborate with Petros, our state-owned oil and gas company, in advancing Sarawak’s oil and gas industry,” he said. “Sarawak is ready with legislative support to develop CCUS sites, and Petros will serve as our resource manager to promote and develop these ventures.”
Sarawak currently has three CCUS projects, with one involving a consortium of Japanese oil and gas companies, illustrating the state’s commitment to fostering international partnerships in this innovative field.
A New Era of Sustainable Infrastructure
Shell Malaysia’s country chair and vice president of Integrated Gas and Upstream Malaysia, Siti Sulaiman, highlighted OSSM’s eco-friendly features. She described the building as a “symbol of Shell’s dedication to fostering sustainable growth and energy efficiency.”
The OSSM building, owned and managed by Pantai Bayu Indah Sdn Bhd, boasts a range of environmentally conscious technologies. It features electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, solar panels capable of generating approximately 80,000kWh of clean energy annually, and a sophisticated rainwater harvesting system that supports the building’s irrigation needs. These elements reflect Shell’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint while setting a new standard for green building practices in Sarawak.
In addition to these innovations, OSSM’s façade is equipped with Low-Emissivity (Low-E) glass panels that reduce the need for artificial lighting and air conditioning, significantly lowering energy consumption. The building also includes Sarawak’s first Shell Café, offering a diverse menu that caters to a variety of dietary preferences, including meat-free options.
Setting New Standards with Cutting-Edge Facilities
One Shell Square Miri pioneers several new features for Sarawak’s business infrastructure. Notably, it includes an advanced floor destination elevator system, allowing visitors to pre-select their destination floor before entering the elevator, thus streamlining traffic flow and enhancing convenience for its occupants.
Beyond its technological advancements, OSSM reflects a harmonious blend of form and function. The garden deck on the first floor, irrigated using the building’s rainwater harvesting system, provides a green space for relaxation, making the structure not only energy-efficient but also user-friendly.
Recognizing the Role of Local Leaders and International Partners
The event saw attendance from key state leaders, including Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian; Minister of Transport Datuk Sri Lee Kim Shin; Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi; and State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki. Shell’s executive vice president of Conventional Oil & Gas, Peter Costello, also attended, underscoring the significance of Shell’s enduring partnership with Sarawak.
Abang Johari’s remarks highlighted the government’s unwavering support for initiatives that align with Sarawak’s long-term goals of sustainability and growth. He expressed hope that Shell’s ongoing collaborations with local entities like Petros would open new pathways for Sarawak’s energy sector.
“As we continue our journey toward green energy, Shell’s participation is not only welcome but essential,” the Premier stated. “Together, we can ensure that Sarawak remains at the forefront of Malaysia’s energy transition and continues to grow as a modern, forward-looking state.”
Shell’s contributions to Sarawak go beyond the business of oil and gas; they represent a shared vision for progress, sustainability, and innovation. With the opening of One Shell Square Miri, the Premier’s vision of a modern, sustainable Sarawak is one step closer to becoming a reality.
