KUCHING, Dec 27 – Sarawak has shattered its outdated label as a “poor and backward” state under the visionary leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. From championing the green and hydrogen economy to surpassing tourism milestones and securing record-breaking investments, Sarawak is now a beacon of growth and prosperity in Malaysia.
Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) Youth Chief Datuk Snowdan Lawan lauded Sarawak’s transformation, highlighting its recognition as a high-income economy. “For several years, our State budget has consistently surpassed the double-digit billion mark. The Premier’s innovative revenue strategies have freed us from the stigma of being labelled poor and backward,” he stated today.
Pioneering Green Economy and Tourism Excellence
Sarawak has emerged as a leader in the green and hydrogen economy, a sector critical for sustainable development. Its tourism industry also flourished in 2024, surpassing the target of four million visitors and earning global acclaim as a top travel destination.
New Airline and Banking Initiatives
In a groundbreaking move, Sarawak is on track to establish its own airline, a feat unmatched by any other Malaysian state. Plans to secure a controlling stake in a banking institution further solidify its economic influence regionally and globally.
Infrastructure Boosts Connectivity
Looking ahead to 2025, major infrastructure projects, including roads and bridges, are set for completion, enhancing both physical and cyber connectivity. With a RM15.3 billion allocation under Budget 2025, the state is primed for accelerated development.
Key projects by the nine regional development agencies, such as the Integrated Regional Samarahan Development Agency (IRSDA) and Ulu Rajang Development Agency (URDA), are expected to uplift rural areas significantly.
Snowdan remains optimistic: “Sarawak’s journey of transformation continues, with endless possibilities for progress.”
