BINTULU (Dec 12) – The Apau Koyan Cultural Festival 2024 in Sungai Asap, Belaga, has achieved international acclaim by securing two Elite World Records, blending cultural pride and environmental sustainability.
Murum assemblyman Kennedy Chukpai Ugon announced the historic achievements at the event’s launch, celebrating the Orang Ulu community’s dedication to preserving their heritage while embracing eco-conscious practices.
The first record featured the largest Sape sculpture, a stunning 12.19-metre-long masterpiece crafted entirely from recycled motorcycle parts. Weighing three tonnes, the sculpture incorporated 4,000 components, including springs, sprockets, and absorbers.
“This monumental artwork reflects the Orang Ulu’s deep reverence for their traditional musical instruments and their commitment to sustainable innovation,” Chukpai said.
The second record showcased the largest traditional Orang Ulu music and dance ensemble, with over 1,000 participants from 20 ethnic groups, including Iban, Bidayuh, Malay, and Chinese performers. Accompanied by 16 types of Orang Ulu traditional instruments, the ensemble delivered an awe-inspiring performance, uniting diverse communities in a shared celebration of cultural heritage.
Chukpai praised the dedication of everyone involved, particularly Belaga district officer Bidah Lujah and her team, for their tireless efforts in organising the event.
“This festival serves as a platform to showcase the unique and fascinating Orang Ulu culture to the global stage,” he added.
The festival, which began on Dec 9 and concludes this Saturday (Dec 14), was officiated by Deputy Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Liwan Lagang, representing Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Broadcast live on the Heart of Borneo Culture Facebook page, the event has drawn widespread attention, highlighting the rich traditions and creative spirit of the Orang Ulu community.
