KUCHING: Good news for public transport users in Kuching! The long-awaited BAS.MY Kuching Stage Bus Service Transformation (SBST) programme officially started its operations today. Six modern buses are now running along the Q10 route, from the iconic Open Air Market in Kuching city to Serian town, covering a total of 48 stops.
According to Sarawak’s Minister for Transport, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, these buses are designed to be comfortable and accessible for all, including persons with disabilities (PWD). The route covers 67 kilometres (km) and offers affordable fares to make public transport easier for everyone.

More Buses Coming Soon
Dato Sri Lee explained that the current six buses are only the beginning. By the end of April, the number of operational buses will increase to 56, introduced in phases.

“In March, we will have 20 more buses joining the fleet. By April, another 26 buses will start operating. In total, 56 new modern buses will be serving Kuching under the SBST programme,” he said during the launch ceremony at the Open Air Market on Wednesday.
These buses are not only comfortable but also equipped with CCTV cameras for passenger safety, GPS tracking for better scheduling, and PWD-friendly features such as ramps and designated seating.
Free Bus Rides for Students, Seniors and PWD
One of the most attractive features of the BAS.MY Kuching service is the free rides offered to students, PWDs, and senior citizens aged 60 and above. Those eligible can apply for the BAS.MY Concession Card directly through the operator to enjoy this benefit.
Dato Sri Lee even took a short ride on the bus himself, travelling to Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) before the bus continued its journey to Serian.
He reminded the bus operator to follow the schedule strictly, as punctuality and reliability are crucial for a successful public transport service. Enforcement agencies are also expected to carry out regular checks to ensure smooth operations.
This new service is part of Sarawak’s bigger plan to improve public transport, reduce traffic congestion, and promote affordable, eco-friendly travel for everyone. – UKAS
