KUCHING (Jan 31): The Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) has issued a public warning about the potential presence of crocodiles due to the ongoing floods in the state. Heavy rainfall has caused water levels to rise, increasing the risk of crocodiles moving out of their usual habitats and into residential areas, drains, and rivers.

Public Urged to Stay Vigilant

In a Facebook post, SFC reminded the public to stay alert and be aware of their surroundings during this period of heavy rain. The corporation warned that floodwaters could push crocodiles into unexpected locations, heightening the chances of human encounters.

“With the rise of water levels, crocodiles are known to move out of their usual areas, which potentially leads to encounters with people near drains or rivers.”

Safety Precautions Issued

To prevent accidents, SFC has provided several important safety tips:

  • Parents should not allow children to play near large drains or rivers.
  • The public should stay informed about crocodile sightings and updates from authorities.
  • Avoid outdoor activities in the late afternoon and evening, as crocodiles are more active during these times.
  • Refrain from disposing of waste or animal carcasses in rivers, as they may attract crocodiles.
  • Farmers are advised to keep their livestock in secure enclosures to prevent them from wandering into crocodile-prone areas.

Emergency Contact Information

SFC has urged the public to save emergency contact numbers in their mobile phones for quick access in case of any crocodile-related incidents. Members of the public can report crocodile sightings or emergencies by calling:

  • Kuching: 019-885 9996
