KAPIT: Burie, a unique heritage site in Sarawak, has the potential to become a major tourism attraction. With its rich cultural significance, Burie could be developed into a valuable tourism product that highlights Sarawak’s traditional crafts.
Sarawak Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industries and Performing Arts, Datuk Snowdan Lawan, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to preserving and promoting Sarawak’s crafts. He emphasized that various initiatives are being carried out to strengthen the craft industry and ensure its sustainability.
Digitalization to Boost Craft Industry

Datuk Snowdan encouraged craft traders to embrace digital technology, including e-commerce and online marketing, to expand their reach beyond local markets. He noted that the integration of digital platforms would help Sarawak’s artisans compete at both national and international levels.
“Burie is not just part of our cultural heritage, but also a valuable asset that can attract tourists. We want to see more craft traders succeed, not only within Malaysia but also on a global scale,” he said during the opening ceremony of the Burie Sewing Workshop on Thursday.
Preserving Heritage Amidst Modern Development
The Deputy Minister stressed the importance of preserving Sarawak’s traditional arts and crafts, even as the state undergoes rapid development. He reminded the public that cultural heritage plays a vital role in shaping national identity.
“In our pursuit of development, we must not forget our heritage. It is crucial to nurture and promote our traditional crafts to ensure that they remain relevant for future generations,” he explained.
Burie Sewing Workshop Empowers Artisans
To support the preservation of Burie craftsmanship, the Sarawak Craft Council collaborated with local artisan Durie Likong to organize a specialized Burie Sewing Workshop. The initiative aims to equip participants with essential skills to master Burie sewing techniques and boost their competitiveness in the craft industry.
The workshop serves as both a learning platform and an opportunity for participants to engage with experienced craftsmen. By fostering knowledge-sharing and hands-on practice, the program seeks to sustain and elevate Sarawak’s craft heritage.
