KUCHING (Dec 12): A civil servant implicated in a corruption case involving construction projects worth RM250 million in Sarawak has been released on bail by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
The 45-year-old was presented before Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan today, who granted his release on RM50,000 undeposited bail with one local surety. The court also directed the individual to report to the MACC office monthly.
The suspect had previously been remanded for four days on December 5, with an additional three-day extension, which expired today. The investigation is being conducted under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009.
Initially represented by lawyer Steven Beti, the suspect was represented by counsel Roger Chin during today’s proceedings.
Investigation Details and Other Suspects
The MACC investigation also involves two other individuals – company owners with honorific titles of ‘Datuk’ and ‘Dato Sri.’
The ‘Datuk’ was released on December 9, while the ‘Dato Sri’ remains in custody under a five-day remand from December 10.
Authorities believe the trio conspired to facilitate the awarding of Public Works Department (PWD) contracts in a district in Sarawak to specific companies between 2022 and 2024. These deals, allegedly worth RM250 million, were secured in exchange for bribes.
The MACC continues to probe the extent of this corruption case, which highlights the abuse of power within public office and private partnerships.
Public Reaction
This case has sparked concern among Malaysians, particularly in Sarawak, about transparency and accountability in awarding public contracts. The public eagerly awaits further updates from MACC on the investigation’s progress.
