KUCHING, March 21 – A 25-year-old man has been remanded for seven days to assist police in investigating the brutal murder of a 36-year-old woman whose lifeless body was discovered in a rental room in MJC Batu Kawa.

Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan approved the remand application today following a request by the police under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code. The suspect, who was apprehended last night, will remain in police custody from March 22 to March 28.

Suspect Has Criminal Record

The suspect, identified as a construction site cleaner, has a past criminal record under Section 376 of the Penal Code for rape. Authorities are now investigating his possible involvement in the murder case under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty upon conviction.

Padawan police chief Supt Mohd Irwan Hafiz Md Radzi earlier confirmed that the victim’s body was discovered on Feb 6. Initial investigations revealed that she had a fabric ligature wrapped around her neck, suggesting possible strangulation as the cause of death.

Ongoing Investigation

The case is currently handled by ASP Sylvarius Gopog, who leads the investigation. Police have yet to disclose the suspect’s connection to the victim or the motive behind the murder.

Authorities urge the public to cooperate with the investigation and come forward with any relevant information. The tragic incident has raised concerns about rental safety in urban areas and the importance of strict tenant screening to prevent such crimes.
