KUCHING (Jan 22): Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian has emphasized that stronger collaboration between local communities and government agencies is crucial to addressing the growing flood challenges in Sarawak.
Speaking at a press conference at Wisma Bapa Malaysia, Dr Sim, who is also the Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government, highlighted the proactive measures being undertaken by local authorities to prepare for flash floods, as guided by the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
“Local governments, together with the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID), are actively clearing rivers and drains to prevent blockages that cause flash floods,” he said. However, he noted that littering remains a significant problem.

“When conducting cleaning operations, DID and municipal councils often encounter large amounts of garbage. Everyone has a role in keeping our drainage and rivers clean. We encourage the public to collaborate with us and report littering activities to local authorities,” he urged.
Dr Sim also outlined the state government’s long-term flood mitigation strategy, which includes the development of four retention ponds in Batu Kawah. These ponds, spanning 30 acres, aim to reduce urban flooding in areas prone to flash floods.
“These ponds are expected to significantly mitigate flooding, particularly in critical areas such as the Sarawak General Hospital,” he explained. “By temporarily storing rainwater and releasing it gradually, these detention ponds provide a sustainable solution to urban flooding.”
Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang, and Deputy State Secretary (Operations) Datu Hii Chang Kee were also present at the press conference.
