KUCHING, 18 March 2025 – Satok Assemblyman, Dato Ibrahim Baki, has officially taken the oath as the Deputy Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Sarawak (Utility). His new role will see him overseeing Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) and Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros).

The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Sarawak Astana on Monday, where Dato Ibrahim took his oath before Sarawak Governor, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar. The event was also attended by Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, along with Deputy Premiers, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian. Also present were Speaker of the Sarawak Legislative Assembly, Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nasar, other Sarawak Ministers, Sarawak Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, and Deputy Ministers.

A Seasoned Political Leader

Dato Ibrahim Baki took over the Satok constituency seat from Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari, who is now the Gedong Assemblyman. He is currently the Chief Whip of Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) and previously served as the Deputy Secretary-General of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB). In the 16th PBB General Assembly last February, he was elected as Vice-President of PBB after securing the highest number of votes.

His political journey began in 1985 when he joined the PBB Youth Wing of the Satok Branch. By 1987, he was actively holding key positions, including Secretary-General and Vice-President of the PBB Youth Wing in Sarawak.

Dato Ibrahim’s career started in law, having obtained a Bachelor of Laws (LLB Hons) from the United Kingdom and earning the title of Barrister-at-Law from Lincoln’s Inn. He began his professional journey at Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) in 1984 before co-founding the law firm Messrs. Idris Buang, Ibrahim Baki & Co.

Beyond law, he has over three decades of experience in corporate leadership. He has been actively involved in industries such as property development, shipping, and media. He is currently the chairman of SEB and was formerly a non-independent non-executive director of Petronas.

His appointment as Deputy Minister is expected to further strengthen Sarawak’s utility and telecommunication sector, ensuring steady growth and development under his leadership. – UKAS
