KUCHING (Jan 5) – Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian has called on Sarawakians to remain vigilant and adopt preventive measures in light of the ongoing human metapneumovirus (hMPV) situation in China.
Dr Sim, who also serves as the Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government, emphasised the importance of learning from the Covid-19 pandemic. “Viruses like hMPV are not new, but the outbreak highlights their potential threat,” he said during a press event at the Tua Pek Kong temple.
He noted that unlike Covid-19, hMPV has no vaccine or specific treatment. This makes prevention and monitoring crucial. “The World Health Organization (WHO) has not declared the outbreak an emergency, but Sarawak is ready to act if needed,” he assured.
The State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) and public health authorities are on high alert, with Sarawak’s Public Health Ordinance activated to ensure a swift response should the situation escalate. Dr Sim added, “We are prepared to implement measures similar to those used during the Covid-19 pandemic if necessary.”
Protecting Vulnerable Groups
Dr Sim urged those with chronic conditions such as diabetes or compromised immune systems to be cautious in public spaces. “Simple practices like washing hands, wearing face masks, and avoiding crowded places can significantly reduce the spread of respiratory viruses,” he said.
He also advised individuals with flu-like symptoms to wear masks and seek medical attention promptly to protect themselves and others.
Investments in Health Preparedness
Dr Sim highlighted the vital role of Sarawak’s Infectious Disease Centre in managing severe cases and stressed the importance of research and readiness. “Preparedness is key, especially for vulnerable groups who may require intensive care if infected,” he stated.
He concluded by reiterating the importance of being proactive: “Whether it’s Covid-19, hMPV, or influenza, the precautions remain the same.”
