KUCHING, Sept 5 — An early morning fire broke out today at Jalan Layang-Layang in Sibu, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. The blaze, which erupted in the early hours, severely damaged two blocks of double-storey terraced houses, affecting the livelihoods of the occupants but fortunately sparing them from physical harm.

Fire Engulfs Terrace Houses in Sibu

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba Sarawak) reported that the fire, which started around 6.24 am, engulfed approximately 80 percent of the two affected blocks. Despite the extensive damage, all 28 occupants managed to escape without injuries, thanks to quick action and alertness.

According to Bomba Sarawak, the fire impacted two blocks of permanent structures, each housing 18 rental rooms. Both blocks, Block A and Block B, measured approximately 40×50 feet in size. The devastating fire left only nine rooms untouched—four in Block A and five in Block B.

Swift Response from Fire and Rescue Teams

Upon receiving a distress call, firefighters from BBP Sibu Sentral and BBP Sungai Merah were immediately dispatched to the scene. Their rapid response played a crucial role in controlling the blaze and preventing further damage to the surrounding properties.

“Our teams employed both offensive and defensive firefighting tactics to tackle the raging fire,” stated a spokesperson from Bomba Sarawak.

BBP Sibu Sentral set up a 200-foot hose line with three nozzles and a separate line with a smaller fire hose to fight the flames directly. Meanwhile, BBP Sungai Merah provided additional support, deploying a 300-foot hose to access water from a nearby fire hydrant, crucial in maintaining a steady water supply to combat the fire effectively.

Fire Brought Under Control Within Two Hours

Thanks to the coordinated efforts of the fire and rescue teams, the fire was brought under control, and operations concluded at 8.28 am. Firefighters ensured that the area was safe before declaring the operation complete, preventing further spread and ensuring the safety of nearby residents.

“The quick action by the Bomba teams prevented the fire from spreading further and safeguarded other nearby homes,” said a local resident who witnessed the incident.

Investigations Underway to Determine Cause and Losses

While the fire was contained without causing any injuries, investigations are still ongoing to determine the exact cause of the fire and the extent of the losses incurred. The authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any fire hazards to prevent such incidents.

Bomba Sarawak emphasized the importance of fire safety measures, particularly in densely populated rental properties like those affected in this incident. Ensuring functional smoke alarms, clear fire escape routes, and proper maintenance of electrical systems can greatly reduce the risk of fires.

Community Reaction and Support

The local community has expressed relief that no lives were lost in the incident. Many residents have stepped forward to offer temporary shelter and assistance to those affected by the fire.

“We are grateful that everyone escaped safely, but it’s heartbreaking to see the destruction. We are ready to help in any way we can,” said a neighbor.

Local authorities and non-governmental organizations are mobilizing support to provide aid to the affected families, including temporary accommodation, food, and essential supplies.

Fire Safety Remains a Priority in Sarawak

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of fire preparedness and the need for continuous community education on fire safety. As Sarawak continues to grow, the focus on safety and prevention measures must remain a top priority to protect lives and property.

Focus on Fire Prevention Measures

Fire incidents like this highlight the critical need for preventive measures in homes, especially in high-density residential areas. Regular safety checks, proper maintenance of electrical appliances, and awareness of fire escape routes are essential steps that can save lives.

As the investigation continues, the community remains vigilant and committed to supporting those affected, showcasing the resilience and unity of Sibu’s residents.
