KUCHING, March 22 – Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Dato Sri Tiong King Sing, has taken urgent steps to address flood risks in Sarawak by pushing for immediate river dredging at Rajang and Igan rivers. He recently discussed the matter with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, stressing the need for swift action to prevent recurring floods in low-lying areas.
According to Tiong, many areas like Tanjung Manis, Bintangor, and Sarikei are facing severe water stagnation issues. Blocked river flows have led to frequent flooding in Sibu and surrounding districts, even after short periods of rain.
“I have spoken to the Prime Minister and requested immediate dredging works in Rajang and Igan rivers. This is crucial as many areas suffer from blocked water flow, causing floods to occur even with minimal rainfall,” Tiong said, as reported by TVS.

Tiong made these remarks during his visit to the temporary evacuation centre (PPS) at Dewan Komuniti Sibujaya earlier today. He also pointed out that places like Dudong have been severely impacted by water blockages, resulting in repeated floods whenever there is heavy rain. The proposed dredging works aim to increase river water flow capacity and speed up floodwater recession in affected areas.
Financial Assistance for Flood Victims
On the issue of aid for flood victims, Tiong stated that financial assistance will be determined based on the assessment of the Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC).
“We are awaiting a decision from SDMC to determine the amount of additional aid for affected victims. While assistance from welfare organisations and our side is available, it may not be enough,” he said.
He also encouraged the public to contribute and support flood victims in any way possible. Additionally, he expressed gratitude to PPS personnel for their dedication and hard work in ensuring the safety and well-being of those displaced by the floods.
With urgent action being taken, Sarawakians are hopeful that these dredging efforts will bring long-term relief to flood-prone areas. — TVS
