Elderly Man Dies, Wife Injured in Jalan Kulas Axia Car Crash

KUCHING – A tragic accident on Jalan Kulas yesterday afternoon claimed the life of an elderly man and left his wife seriously injured. The incident, which occurred at approximately 12.30 pm, involved a Perodua Axia that skidded and crashed into a lamppost and tree on the road divider.

Kuching District Police Chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah confirmed that the victims, both foreign nationals in their 70s, were travelling towards the Satok traffic lights from the Tun Abdul Rahman Yaakop Bridge when the accident happened.

“The driver is believed to have lost control of the vehicle, which resulted in the car skidding and hitting a lamppost and a tree,” Mohd Farhan said in a statement today.

The elderly man was rushed to the Sarawak General Hospital emergency unit by ambulance, but medical officers later confirmed his passing at 1.43 pm on December 16, 2024. His wife, who was a passenger in the car, sustained severe injuries and remains under treatment at Sarawak General Hospital.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which deals with causing death by reckless or dangerous driving. If found guilty, the offender could face a jail term of five to ten years and a fine ranging between RM20,000 and RM50,000.

Police are urging witnesses or individuals with relevant information to come forward and contact Traffic Investigating Officer Insp. Shazwina Alfera binti Ah Yit @ Suaip at 016-7433078 or the nearest police station.

ACP Mohd Farhan also reminded all road users to be extra cautious, especially during the rainy season, and to adhere to traffic regulations for their safety and the safety of others.
