SIBU: A family of five living in dire conditions at Jalan Wong Ting Hock 1, Sungai Merah, has been rescued in a joint effort led by the Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU) Sibu, in collaboration with the Social Welfare Department (JKM) and the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK).
The rescue operation, carried out today, was prompted by the heartbreaking situation of the family, who had been struggling to survive by selling scrap metal collected from residential and industrial areas around Sibu. SDNU Sibu chairman Chambai Lindong stated that the organization took immediate action after being alerted to the family’s desperate living conditions.
“A team consisting of three SDNU Sibu members and JKM officers lodged a police report at the Sibu Central Police Station before heading to the family’s home,” said Chambai. The operation was also supported by police officers and AADK members, ensuring the family received the necessary aid.

Following the rescue, the children were placed under temporary custody of JKM and will undergo medical examinations at a hospital to assess their health. JKM is also making efforts to locate the family’s next of kin to determine the best course of action for their future care.
Meanwhile, the parents were taken by AADK for a drug test to rule out any involvement with illegal substances. Chambai acknowledged the emotional distress of the mother, who was visibly shaken when separated from her children, but emphasized that the priority remains the children’s well-being and safety.
“These children deserve a better life. No child should have to endure such harsh conditions. We can only hope for a positive outcome for this family,” he added.
Chambai also highlighted that this rescue operation underscores the importance of continued collaboration between various agencies to combat urban poverty and support marginalized communities. He extended his gratitude to all involved, particularly SDNU Sibu representatives Jawi Anom, Phillip Webster, and Ambrose John, who played key roles in the mission.
This successful operation serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to ensure vulnerable families receive the help they need, paving the way for a brighter future for those in desperate situations.
