SIBU (Dec 13): A flash flood struck SK Nanga Budu in Krian, Saratok, forcing the evacuation of 26 pupils and 24 staff members to safety earlier today.
The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) reported receiving a distress call at 7:15 am, prompting the deployment of three firefighters from the Saratok fire station. The school, located approximately 120km from the station, was inundated by floodwaters that quickly rose to dangerous levels.
“Upon arrival, we found the school hall submerged, with the water level rising rapidly,” stated Bomba in an official release.
Some low-lying areas within the school premises saw water levels reaching chest height, raising concerns for the safety of pupils and staff. Despite the alarming situation, no injuries were reported during the evacuation process.
Bomba further added that the rain had ceased, and the weather at the location was reported to be clear. However, the situation remains under close monitoring as flooding can still occur in low-lying areas even after rainfall stops.
Residents living near the affected school have been advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions. Authorities are also coordinating with local agencies to provide temporary shelter and resources for those affected by the flood.
