Foreigners Among Three Arrested in Bintulu for AUD15,000 Theft

MIRI, 12 March 2025 Three men, including two foreign nationals aged between 58 and 59, were arrested in Bintulu on Tuesday for allegedly stealing Australian dollars (AUD) 15,000 (approximately RM42,450) from a vehicle belonging to an electrical equipment shop owner.

The trio was caught in a swift joint operation by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) teams from Miri and Bintulu at around 3 pm on the same day. The incident reportedly took place on Monday morning at approximately 9.30 am at Piasau Industrial Estate, Miri.

How the Theft Happened

According to initial police investigations, the victim had momentarily stepped out of his vehicle to collect tools from his shop. Unfortunately, he had left his car doors unlocked, providing an opportunity for the suspects.

CCTV footage later revealed that the culprits swiftly entered the vehicle and took valuables, including the large sum of cash.

Successful Recovery of Stolen Money

Following the arrests, authorities successfully recovered the stolen Australian banknotes. Police believe that the suspects may have been involved in similar cases and are conducting further investigations.

The case is currently being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code, which deals with theft. If found guilty, the suspects could face imprisonment, fines, or both.

Sarawak police have reminded the public to remain vigilant and ensure their vehicles are locked at all times, even during short stops, to prevent such incidents.
