KUCHING: In a move to enhance accessibility to popular tourist destinations, Sarawak is set to expand its free bus service to more tourist spots, according to Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, the Minister of Tourism, Creative Industries and Performing Arts. This development comes in response to the increasing demand from the public for easier transportation to attractions such as the Semenggoh Wildlife Sanctuary (SWC) and other scenic spots in Kuching.
Speaking after a Hari Raya Aidilfitri visit by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, Dato Sri Abdul Karim explained that while the public has shown interest in expanding the service, the government must carefully evaluate the potential locations to avoid financial losses. “So far, we have provided buses to popular tourist destinations like the Semenggoh Wildlife Sanctuary and other locations in Kuching. However, we need to ensure that the demand justifies the costs to prevent running the service at a loss,” he explained.

He acknowledged that certain smaller communities may not have enough visitors to justify the continuation of such services, which could lead to financial setbacks. However, he hinted that future expansion plans could involve tourist hotspots like Bau and Borneo Highland, which are currently undergoing development in the tourism sector.
Moreover, the Minister did not rule out the possibility of extending the free bus service to Miri, a region rich in UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including Niah National Park and Gunung Mulu National Park. Dato Sri Abdul Karim noted that the extension of the service to Miri would depend on the completion of facility upgrades and the resulting increase in visitor numbers. “If the facilities in Miri are upgraded and we see more visitors, I am open to the idea of a free bus service from Miri to Niah,” he said.
This move aligns with the government’s ongoing efforts to improve public transport infrastructure while simultaneously boosting tourism in the state. — UKAS EDITION
