Boosting the Economy and Medical Tourism

Beyond improving healthcare services, the Premier highlighted the economic impact of the hospital. He noted that the project will generate employment for local doctors, nurses, and healthcare professionals. Additionally, the presence of a world-class hospital will enhance Sarawak’s medical tourism sector, benefiting industries such as hospitality, retail, and transportation.

Advancing Medical Research and Education

Abang Johari also spoke on the government’s initiatives to strengthen the healthcare sector through collaboration between private hospitals and academic institutions. He referenced the ongoing construction of a teaching hospital at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) as a step forward in advancing medical research, particularly in tropical diseases.

“Sarawak has invested RM300 million to establish the Tropical Infectious Disease Research Center. After the challenges of COVID-19, we recognize the importance of comprehensive data analysis and AI-driven solutions to combat emerging infectious diseases,” he explained.

Sustainable Healthcare for a Healthier Future

In addition to healthcare advancements, the Premier reaffirmed Sarawak’s commitment to environmental sustainability as a means to promote public health.

“Air pollution contributes to rising health concerns. That’s why the Sarawak government is investing in clean energy, including hydrogen-powered public transport, to create a healthier living environment,” he stated.

Integrating Eastern and Western Medicine

Highlighting Sarawak’s rich biodiversity, Abang Johari also advocated for integrating Eastern and Western medicine.

“We have an abundance of medicinal plants in our rainforests. Countries like South Korea are already combining Eastern and Western medicine, particularly in cancer treatment. Sarawak has the potential to lead in this research,” he said.

Establishing a Cancer Research Center

The Premier further announced the establishment of a Cancer Research Center in Sarawak, a project initially championed by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr. Sim Kui Hian.

“Securing federal funding was challenging, but I assured Dr. Sim that Sarawak would invest first, and the federal government could reimburse us later. This RM1 billion project will provide world-class cancer treatment for Sarawakians,” he added.

Improving Accessibility to Healthcare

To ensure that quality medical services are accessible to all, the Premier highlighted ongoing infrastructure developments such as the Pan Borneo Highway and Sarawak Coastal Road. These projects will enhance connectivity, making it easier for residents from Bintulu, Sibu, and other areas to access Gleneagles Hospital Kuching.

Also present at the event were Deputy Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Amar Professor Dr. Sim Kui Hian, Chairman of IHH Healthcare Tan Sri Dr. Nik Norzul Thani Nik Hassan Thani, and CEO of IHH Healthcare Group Dr. Prem Kumar Nair.
