KUCHING, SARAWAK – Manjeet Sidhu, President of Pertubuhan Pembangunan Insan Sarawak (PPIS), made an impactful visit to Kampung Tabuan Melayu recently, aiming to tackle the issue of hardcore poverty. Kampung Tabuan Melayu, which faces both urban and rural challenges, is home to families struggling with basic needs like food, shelter, and job opportunities.

During the visit, Manjeet, accompanied by Vimala, stressed that addressing poverty requires teamwork between local leaders, government agencies, and welfare groups. “Food aid is essential, but families living in old, crumbling homes need more than that,” Manjeet said. “They need sustainable solutions like job opportunities, better housing, and access to social welfare.”

PPIS regularly runs outreach programmes focusing on key issues such as job creation, healthcare, and educational support. Manjeet suggested collaborating with government bodies such as the Sarawak Housing Development Corporation (HDC) and the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development to provide long-term solutions like home repairs and job support for affected families.

Here are some proposed steps to help:
- Expanding Food Aid: Partner with NGOs and local businesses to increase food support for families with young children.
- Income-Generating Programmes: Offer skills training and promote small business opportunities to help families achieve financial independence.
- Housing Assistance: Work with government agencies for house repairs or relocation support for those living in dangerous conditions.
- Direct Welfare Aid: Coordinate with Jabatan Kebajikan Masyarakat (JKM) to ensure these families get financial assistance and necessary benefits.
Manjeet highlighted that many families visited were elderly and living in poor conditions. “It’s heartbreaking to see how tough life is for them,” he shared. “Poverty affects every part of life—health, education, and opportunities—but PPIS is committed to easing their burden. We serve humanity.”

Manjeet’s visit emphasised the importance of long-term planning and collaboration between organisations and authorities to create lasting change for vulnerable communities.
