KUCHING, Feb 8: The Sarawak Basic Needs Assistance (SKAS) programme registration in Satok received an overwhelming response as hundreds of residents gathered at two designated venues—Dewan Anak Seni Bandarsah and Satok Sports Complex—on the first day of the two-day event.

Satok assemblyman Dato Ibrahim Baki shared that the initiative is part of efforts to ensure that all eligible recipients in the area are registered for the much-needed aid.

“This programme is crucial as there are over 3,000 eligible recipients in Satok. We aim to make the registration process as convenient as possible. The counters will operate from 8am to 4.30pm for two days, and if the response remains high, we will expand to other areas,” said Ibrahim during his visit to the registration centre.

According to him, volunteers have been working tirelessly to reach out to eligible recipients, including making phone calls to inform those who may not be aware of the programme.

“The turnout today has been very encouraging. We registered several hundred people, and we expect even more tomorrow. If the need arises, we are prepared to extend the programme to next weekend,” he added.

The assemblyman also revealed plans to bring the registration drive to Kampung Segedup and Sungai Maong, where many eligible recipients reside.

Ibrahim commended the Sarawak government’s commitment to easing the financial burden of its people, especially in light of rising living costs.

“This year, the government has allocated nearly RM500 million for SKAS, and this amount will likely increase annually. It reflects the state’s dedication to helping those in need,” he noted.

Also present was the Political Secretary to the Premier, Abdul Samat Gany, who is coordinating the programme.

The SKAS initiative is expected to roll out registration drives in more areas soon, ensuring that more Sarawakians can benefit from the aid.
