Embracing Heritage and Inspiring the Future

KUCHING: The Ibu Pertiwi flag raising ceremony will be held on the first Sunday of each month at Dataran Ibu Pertiwi, Kuching. Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced that this event, organized by North Kuching City Hall (DBKU), is designed to inspire the people of Sarawak towards the vision of a developed and prosperous region.

“In addition to being a symbolic event, it holds significant meaning, especially for the younger generation,” Premier Abang Johari stated during a press conference after officiating at the inaugural flag raising ceremony.

Instilling Patriotism in the Youth

Involvement of School Children

To foster a sense of patriotism among the youth, the ceremony actively involves children from various schools. This initiative aims to instill a deep love for Sarawak and the nation in the younger generation.

“This square, I have noticed, has become a popular spot for taking pictures over the past few months, and we will maintain this area as it is close to the state legislative assembly building,” said Premier Abang Johari.

Dataran Ibu Pertiwi: A Place of Historical Significance

A Witness to Key Historical Events

Dataran Ibu Pertiwi has been a silent witness to numerous historical events, from the Brunei era to the Brooke Rajah era, the colonial era, and the formation of the Federation of Malaysia. Premier Abang Johari highlighted the significance of the square, which has seen the departure of colonial governors and the strategic placement of Fort Margherita by the second White Rajah of Sarawak, Sir Charles Brooke.

“When former Governors of the Colonial Era of Sarawak, Anthony Abell and Sir Alexander Waddel, sailed back to Britain, they passed through the Sarawak River, and it was at this square that the people of Sarawak saw their departure,” he added.

Sharing Sarawak’s Heritage with Visitors

A Solemn Ceremony Open to All

The Ibu Pertiwi flag raising ceremony is not just for the locals but is also meant to be shared with visitors. Similar to ceremonial traditions in countries like Britain, this event in Kuching offers a glimpse into the rich heritage and solemn traditions of Sarawak.

“For us in Kuching City, this is a very solemn ceremony that we want to share with our visitors,” said Premier Abang Johari.

Addressing the Call for Sarawak Rangers

Focus on Existing Defence Forces

When asked about suggestions to re-establish the Sarawak Rangers, Premier Abang Johari clarified that the state government has no plans for such a move. He emphasized that the defence of Sarawak is the responsibility of the federal government through the Ministry of Defence.

“Sarawak already has a Veteran Special Force and the Territorial Army Regiment. This means that there is no need to bring back the Sarawak Rangers,” he explained.

Strengthening Maritime Security

Premier Abang Johari also mentioned the presence of the Sarawak Coast Guard, the only one in Malaysia, dedicated to protecting Sarawak’s waters. “Additionally, we have the Sarawak Coast Guard, the only one in Malaysia, to protect Sarawak’s waters, and we only assist the federal government to an extent that we can,” he added.

Celebrating with Leaders

Attendance of Dignitaries

The inaugural ceremony was graced by the presence of several dignitaries, including Deputy Premiers Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, and Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian; State Legislative Assembly Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar, along with Sarawak Ministers and deputy ministers.

Conclusion: A New Chapter in Sarawak’s Tradition

As this monthly event continues, it will undoubtedly become a cherished tradition that unites the people of Sarawak and instills a deep sense of pride and patriotism in the younger generation.
