KUCHING: The famous White Cat statue at Jalan Padungan is once again dressed for the festive season, this time wearing a traditional ‘baju Melayu’ to mark Hari Raya Aidilfitri 2025.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian highlighted the significance of the statue’s changing decorations throughout the year, reflecting Kuching’s strong sense of unity. The city, known as the City of Unity, continues to showcase its multicultural harmony through this symbolic gesture.
“By dressing up the cat statue in different cultural outfits for various festivals, we celebrate the diversity and unity of Kuching. This effort is made possible by the Kuching South City Council (MBKS),” he said in a statement on his official Facebook page.

Sustainability and Cultural Identity
In line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), this year’s decoration incorporates recycled materials, including rubber tyres. Dr Sim praised this initiative, stating that sustainability should go hand in hand with cultural celebration.
“Incorporating recycled materials not only helps the environment but also serves as a reminder that we can celebrate our traditions while being responsible citizens,” he added.
Sarawak’s Commitment to Unity
Dr Sim also reaffirmed Sarawak’s unwavering commitment to unity, respect, and harmony among its diverse communities.
“In Sarawak, we never take for granted the spirit of unity, solidarity, and respect. There is no place for bigotry, extremism, or division here. We don’t just acknowledge these values; we live by them every day,” he said.
With Sarawak moving towards its 2030 vision, Dr Sim stressed that efforts in nation-building must start now.
“The time for a new era of Sarawak’s nation-building is now. The work begins today, even though our target is 2030,” he concluded.
As Kuching continues to celebrate its rich cultural heritage, the White Cat statue stands as a proud symbol of unity, reminding residents and visitors alike of the harmonious spirit that defines the city.
