The beating of gongs, the ringing of bells, and the sounds of traditional music welcomed guests at the Kadazandusun Cultural Association (KDCA) grounds in Penampang as the state-level Katan Harvest Festival officially kicked off on Thursday. The vibrant event saw the presence of Yangri Tunar Mahin and First Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Jeffrey Kitingan, along with other ministers and dignitaries, joining thousands of attendees for the grand opening.

Celebrations from May 1 to May 31

The month-long celebration was initially launched in Rau on May 1 and will culminate in a grand finale on May 30 and 31. Guests have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich cultural heritage of the Kadazandusun community. The festival features a plethora of activities, including cultural dances, traditional food feasts, traditional games, and various other engaging events.

Highlight: The Crowning of Unduk Ngadau

The highlight of the Katan Harvest Festival, eagerly anticipated every year, is the announcement of the Unduk Ngadau or Harvest Queen. This year, 51 Unduk Ngadau contestants from districts, towns, and branches of the KDCA, including six from Peninsular Malaysia and one each from Labuan and Sarawak, will compete in the final on Friday. The competition promises to be a showcase of beauty, grace, and cultural pride.

Throughout the two-day culmination, guests can expect an authentic cultural experience, celebrating the traditions and customs of the Kadazandusun people. The Katan Harvest Festival stands as a testament to the community’s enduring cultural legacy, offering a unique glimpse into their vibrant way of life.
