KUCHING (Dec 7): The city of Kuching radiated peace, joy, and unity as the 2024 Kuching Christmas Parade brought together over 7,000 participants from various denominations and backgrounds to celebrate the spirit of Christmas. This annual event, with the theme “Peace Be With You,” filled the streets with hymns, prayers, and festive displays, transforming the city into a hub of celebration and goodwill.
A Night to Remember at MBKS Jubilee Ground
The celebrations commenced at 6.30pm at the MBKS Jubilee Ground, where the air was filled with excitement. Participants arrived in colourful and vibrant costumes, reflecting the festive spirit of the season. The programme began with the solemn recitation of the Apostles’ Creed, setting a reflective and meaningful tone for the evening.
Hymns such as “For Unto Us a Child Is Born” and “O Come, All Ye Faithful” followed, performed beautifully by a worship team from the Roman Catholic Church. The songs resonated deeply with the audience, capturing the essence of Christmas.
Adding to the spiritual atmosphere, Captain Carmen from The Salvation Army delivered a heartfelt prayer, reminding attendees of the deeper significance of the season. Scripture readings in English, Malay, Iban, and Chinese showcased the multicultural harmony of Kuching’s Christian community. Passages from Jeremiah, Isaiah, and the Gospel of John conveyed a profound message of peace, love, and reconciliation.
Parade of Lights and Festive Floats
By 7pm, the much-anticipated parade began, captivating spectators with its vibrant display of Christmas floats. A total of 11 intricately designed floats depicted timeless scenes such as the Nativity, Angels, Shepherds, Wise Men, and more. Each float radiated Christmas cheer, drawing admiration as they moved through the streets of Kuching.
Participants dressed in festive costumes accompanied the floats, singing carols and keeping the spirit alive. Leading the caroling sessions along the route was Julian Gabriel, whose lively Singspiration sessions ensured the crowd stayed engaged and in high spirits.
The Boys’ and Girls’ Brigades added energy to the event with six marching bands, their rhythmic performances complementing the festive atmosphere. Their coordinated efforts were a testament to the dedication and enthusiasm that defined the parade.
Acts of Generosity and Community Spirit
At 8.15pm, a highlight of the evening unfolded as gifts were distributed to the public, symbolising the love and generosity that lie at the heart of Christmas. This simple yet meaningful act brought smiles to many faces, reinforcing the event’s central message of sharing and goodwill.
As the evening progressed, the parade’s participants and spectators joined in a soulful rendition of “Silent Night,” creating a magical moment of unity. Most Reverend Archbishop Dato Dr Simon Poh then delivered the benediction, blessing the city and its people, and sealing the event with a spirit of hope and faith.
A Collaboration of Churches
The Kuching Christmas Parade 2024 was organised by the Association of Churches Sarawak (ACS) and the Sarawak Evangelical Christian Association (SECA), with this year’s event hosted by the Methodist Church SCAC. Churches such as the Roman Catholic Church, Anglican Church, Methodist Church SIAC, and BEM (SIB) Church played significant roles. Other participants included the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, The Salvation Army, Sarawak Baptist Church, and SECA member churches like Christ Baptist Church, City Harvest Church, and Hope Church Kuching.
The collaborative effort of these churches highlighted the unity and harmony within the Christian community in Sarawak, making the parade a remarkable celebration of togetherness.
