KUCHING (Feb 10): Region 5 Kuching Marine Police detained three local fishermen and seized their vessels on Feb 8 for allegedly engaging in illegal fishing activities. The arrests were made as part of Ops Taring Tango Papa, following intelligence gathered by the marine police.
Region 5 Marine Police commander ACP Ab Rahman Mat Hasan said the patrol unit intercepted a Class A fishing vessel around 12pm, about three nautical miles offshore from Kuching.
“During the inspection, it was found that the fishermen were using trawl nets in a restricted area, which violates the conditions stated in their fishing licence,” said Ab Rahman in a press statement.

The seized assets, including the fishing vessel, are estimated to be worth RM15,000. The three detained fishermen, along with the seized items, have been handed over to the Kuching Fisheries Department for further investigation and legal action.
Ab Rahman reminded fishermen to adhere to the conditions outlined in their licences to avoid serious consequences. “Under Section 8(b) of the Fisheries Act 1985, breaching the terms of a fishing licence may lead to the confiscation of vessels and hefty fines upon conviction,” he added.
This operation underscores the ongoing efforts by marine police to protect Malaysia’s marine resources and ensure sustainable fishing practices. Fishermen are urged to stay informed about the regulations and avoid fishing in unauthorised areas.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to carrying out regular patrols and strict enforcement to curb illegal fishing, which threatens marine life and impacts the livelihoods of law-abiding fishermen.
