KUCHING: Thousands of spectators gathered in awe as the Kuching Teochew Association hosted a spectacular Year of the Dragon street parade yesterday, celebrating the city’s rich Chinese heritage and Sarawak’s harmonious multicultural spirit.
Lantern Float Steals the Show
Leading the procession, the ‘Lantern Float’, inspired by a traditional red-headed boat, dazzled with its 12-foot height and 28-foot length. Adorned with 88 red lanterns, the float symbolised prosperity, unity, and the deep-rooted traditions of the Teochew community.
Complementing this was the ‘Community Float,’ a vibrant display of traditional Teochew baskets, red-topped cakes, and tea sets. Together, the floats paid tribute to the cultural richness and faiths of the Teochew people.
A Parade of Unity and Tradition
The parade, organised by the historic Hiang Thian Siang Ti Temple, featured over 144 participating teams, including lion and dragon dance troupes, traditional Chinese musicians, and elaborately decorated floats. The procession traversed iconic streets such as Carpenter Street, India Street, and Jalan Padungan, filling the city with colour, rhythm, and joy.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian praised the event, calling it a “true celebration of Sarawak’s multicultural harmony.” He expressed hope for continued blessings of prosperity and good health for the state.
MBKS Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng also joined the festivities, applauding the community’s efforts to preserve and showcase Sarawak’s diverse heritage.
A Memorable Cultural Extravaganza
The vibrant celebration concluded with an invitation for worshippers to collect sponsored lanterns, further spreading the joy and unity symbolised by the parade.
This annual event remains a testament to Kuching’s enduring multicultural spirit, uniting communities through faith, culture, and tradition in a truly memorable fashion.
