KUCHING, Jan 6 – Kuching is set to host 10 of the 42 matches for the International Cricket Council (ICC) Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup from January 18 to 28. Other matches will be held in Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru.
This marks a historic moment as it is the second world cup hosted in Sarawak since the 1997 FIFA World Youth Championship, nearly 28 years ago.
Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Sarawak Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, shared this milestone during the ICC U19 Women’s T20 Cricket World Cup trophy unveiling at Godown Amphitheatre, Kuching Waterfront.
“The qualifying rounds in Kuching will feature New Zealand, South Africa, Samoa, and Nigeria, with the finals scheduled in Kuala Lumpur,” he said.
To prepare for this prestigious event, the Sarawak government fast-tracked upgrades to the Borneo Cricket Ground in Petra Jaya. Currently, the facility is 97% complete.
Prominent attendees at the ceremony included Malaysian Cricket Association patron Tunku Tan Sri Imran Tuanku Jaafar, Deputy Sarawak Secretary (Operation) Datu Hii Chang Kee, and MYSED permanent secretary Morshidi Fredrick.
The Sarawak Cricket Association, backed by the Sarawak State Sport Council and Sarawak Sport Corporation, continues to develop cricket in the state. This effort recently bore fruit when the Sarawak women’s cricket team triumphed over Selangor in the MCA Women’s T20 Interstate 2025 finals.
Special recognition was given to Sarawakian Nur Dania Syuhada, captain of the Malaysian women’s cricket team, who is set to lead her squad on home ground.
Fans are encouraged to attend the 10 matches in Kuching and experience the Nyamai @ Cricket World Cup food pavilion, which will showcase Sarawak’s rich culture through local food, art, and crafts.
