KUCHING, 20 January 2025 – The historic Tua Pek Kong Temple came alive with color and culture today as it hosted a grand eye-dotting ceremony to welcome the Chinese New Year 2025, the Year of the Wood Snake.

This sacred tradition, known as the “eye-opening ceremony,” is performed to awaken the spirit of lion dance figures, symbolizing prosperity, good fortune, and protection from misfortune. A total of 30 intricately designed lions were brought to life in a breathtaking display of cultural pride.

The event was led by various lion dance clubs across Kuching, including the well-known Kelab Naga & Singa Liang Sheng Kuching Sarawak. Each lion dance troupe showcased beautifully crafted lion heads, adorned in vibrant colors and patterns, awaiting the ceremonial touch of red paint on their eyes to signify their awakening.

The ceremony was presided over by temple elders and cultural leaders, who chanted blessings and prayers during the ritual. Once completed, the lions came to life, dancing energetically to the rhythmic beats of drums and cymbals, filling the temple grounds with electrifying energy and joy.
