Fire Breaks Out at Kampung Kekat: Quick Response from Firefighters

The fire was reported at approximately 10.35 pm when the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sarawak received an emergency call about the incident. Firefighters from the Siburan Fire and Rescue Station (BBP Siburan) were immediately dispatched to the scene, located about 14 kilometres from their station. By the time the firefighting team arrived, the 20×20 feet storage structure was completely engulfed in flames.

Efficient Firefighting Efforts Prevent Further Damage

Upon arrival, firefighters acted swiftly to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby areas. Two water hoses connected to the fire engine’s tank were used to extinguish the blaze, and the fire was successfully brought under control by 11.10 pm. The entire operation concluded at 11.20 pm, just under an hour after the emergency call was received.

Bomba Sarawak confirmed that no injuries were reported, and no victims were involved in the incident, ensuring the safety of the nearby residents and workers at the farm.

Investigation Underway to Determine Cause of Fire

The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Fire and Rescue Department. Preliminary assessments suggest that the flames spread rapidly due to the combustible nature of the chicken feed stored within the facility. The exact cause remains unknown, but authorities are examining all possible angles, including electrical faults or negligence.

Impact on Local Farmers and Potential Losses

The fire has sparked concerns among local farmers who rely on Kampung Kekat Chicken Farm for their chicken feed supply. The damaged storage facility plays a crucial role in the supply chain for several poultry businesses in Siburan and the surrounding areas. Although no exact estimate of the losses has been released, the destruction of the feed storage is expected to disrupt operations and potentially affect the prices of poultry products in the local markets.

Local farmers and residents are anxiously awaiting the results of the investigation to understand what triggered the fire and to take necessary precautions to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Community Reacts: Calls for Enhanced Safety Measures

The incident has prompted calls from the community for enhanced safety measures at agricultural and storage facilities, especially those dealing with flammable materials. Local residents have expressed gratitude for the prompt response by the Siburan firefighters, but there are growing demands for better preventive measures, such as regular fire safety checks and the installation of fire detection systems.

Bomba Sarawak has assured the public that they are committed to improving fire safety standards and will be working closely with local farm owners to implement more stringent safety protocols. This initiative aims to prevent such occurrences in the future and ensure the safety of agricultural facilities across Sarawak.

Fire Incidents in Sarawak: A Reminder of the Importance of Fire Safety

This incident at Kampung Kekat is a stark reminder of the importance of fire safety and preparedness. Sarawak has seen a number of fire incidents in recent months, emphasizing the need for continuous awareness and education on fire prevention.

Local authorities urge residents and business owners to remain vigilant and to regularly check their fire safety equipment. Ensuring that fire extinguishers are accessible, emergency exits are clear, and electrical wiring is inspected can make a significant difference in preventing disasters.

As the investigation continues, Bomba Sarawak will release further updates on the cause of the fire and any additional safety recommendations. The incident serves as a wake-up call for all storage and agricultural facilities in Sarawak to review their fire safety measures and protocols.
