KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has called on local graduates to step up and lead groundbreaking innovations in producing leather from Sarawak’s abundant gas resources. He emphasized the need for expertise in engineering and chemistry to unlock the state’s full potential in gas-based industries.
Speaking at the launch of the Graduates Enhancement Training Sarawak – Work Readiness Programme (GETS-WRP) at Wisma Bapa Malaysia on Wednesday, the Premier shared an intriguing revelation about the future of leather production.
“This morning, I came across something fascinating about leather. Traditionally, leather is associated with animal skin, particularly cowhide. But today, I learned that leather can also be made from gas through a process known as cracking. Sarawak has vast gas resources, and I believe our graduates can turn this into an innovative industry,” he stated.

Abang Johari stressed the importance of developing local expertise to transform Sarawak’s economy into a high-income, resource-based one.
“We need our graduates to master the science behind gas cracking and other advanced chemical processes. This knowledge is crucial to lead Sarawak in achieving its economic goals,” he added.
The GETS-WRP programme, designed to enhance graduates’ readiness for strategic sectors, will provide participants with training opportunities in key industries. According to the Premier, this initiative not only equips individuals with essential skills but also sets the stage for their professional growth and contribution to Sarawak’s economic progress.
“The state government requires high-skilled individuals to move forward. After gaining experience, graduates can create their own ventures, boosting their income and driving the state’s economy beyond the middle-income trap,” Abang Johari said.
