Celebrating Kuching City Day: A Commitment to Excellence
KUCHING — As Kuching celebrates City Day, a series of ambitious goals have been outlined by local leaders and council heads with a focus on transforming the city into a model of sustainability and inclusivity. With strategic plans and community initiatives driving their efforts, Kuching’s path forward is marked by a commitment to creating a cleaner, smarter, and more vibrant urban environment.
DBKU’s Vision for a Cleaner, Smarter Kuching
Strategic Planning for Sustainable Development
In a statement made during the City Day celebration, Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) Mayor Hilmy Othman highlighted the ongoing success of DBKU’s Strategic Plan 2022-2030. The plan, built upon the CBSSS (Clean, Beautiful, Safe, Smart, Sustainable) framework, underscores the city’s dedication to holistic urban development. This year marks the third year of implementing the plan, and according to Mayor Othman, the progress has been significant.
“The Strategic Plan is being executed effectively, with a strong emphasis on the 3P’s—partnerships between government bodies, the private sector, and the public,” said Othman. He further elaborated on the establishment of 51 Kejiranan Mesra (KJM) initiatives aimed at boosting community engagement and inclusivity. The KJM projects are integral to this year’s City Day theme, “Bridging Generation – The Legacy of Our Kuching City” or “Merapatkan Jurang Generasi – Legasi Bandaraya Kuching” in Malay.
Community Inclusivity and Intergenerational Engagement
The DBKU’s approach to inclusivity involves engaging all age groups within neighborhoods, encouraging participation from children, teenagers, adults, and the elderly in various community activities. This intergenerational involvement is seen as crucial for fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose among Kuching’s residents.
“This is the unique aspect of DBKU’s KJM initiatives,” Othman noted, “and it enjoys strong support from the Sarawak government under Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.”
Collaborating for a Low-Carbon Future
A key goal for DBKU is the creation of a low-carbon city. The mayor expressed optimism that these efforts would contribute to Sarawak’s broader objectives for sustainable socio-economic development by 2030. “Our initiatives aim to position Kuching as a leading city in Malaysia and globally for environmental conservation,” Othman added.
Efforts from Other Councils: A Unified Approach
Maintaining Cleanliness and Cultural Richness
Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) Chairman Datuk Peter Minos praised the ongoing efforts of DBKU and Kuching South City Council (MBKS) in maintaining the city’s cleanliness and greenery. He acknowledged the dedication required to manage a city as culturally rich as Kuching, which continues to attract tourists with its diverse heritage and culinary delights.
“It’s not an easy task to keep the city clean,” Minos said. “Kuching is celebrated for its cultural vibrancy, and it remains a pleasant destination for visitors.”
Addressing Climate Change and Future Collaboration
Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) Chairman Tan Kai emphasized the importance of inter-council collaboration within the Greater Kuching area. With climate change posing a significant challenge, Tan highlighted the advantages of Sarawak’s renewable energy resources and forest cover. However, he noted that extreme weather events still impact the region.
“Mutual cooperation between government bodies and city residents is essential,” Tan Kai stated. “We are committed to adhering to the 2030 Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS2030) to ensure Sarawak’s continued progress.”
Looking Ahead: Kuching’s Sustainable Vision
As Kuching commemorates City Day, the collective efforts of its councils reflect a shared vision for a sustainable and inclusive urban future. From strategic planning and community engagement to environmental conservation and inter-council collaboration, Kuching’s aspirations are aligned with creating a city that not only thrives but sets a benchmark for urban development globally.
The city’s leaders remain dedicated to transforming Kuching into a model of excellence, driven by a commitment to cleanliness, smart growth, and a harmonious community life.
