KUCHING (Feb 4): The Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) has launched an investigation into the massive logjam at Sungai Krangan, Balai Ringin, to determine the source of the wood debris affecting the river.
According to NREB, they are working closely with relevant agencies to remove the debris and reduce disruptions for the local community.
“Enforcement officers have been deployed to assess the situation and take necessary actions. Cleanup efforts are being coordinated with public agencies and private sector partners to ensure a swift response,” NREB said in a statement.

The board also reminded plantation operators to strictly follow environmental regulations to prevent further destruction of waterways.
“We are committed to protecting local livelihoods and ensuring water security. Offenders responsible for environmental damage will be held accountable,” the statement added.
Repeated Offense by Plantation Company
Balai Ringin assemblyman Datuk Snowdan Lawan revealed that this was the fourth logjam incident at Sungai Krangan, with the debris coming from forest clearing activities upstream. He pointed to a particular plantation company as the cause of the issue.
“The company was already penalised last year for causing a similar problem. Yet, here we are again. Stern action must be taken,” said Snowdan.
He also highlighted the struggles of Kampung Melayu Balai Ringin villagers, especially the fishermen, whose nets were stuck in the debris.
“This recurring issue has affected the livelihoods of the locals. It is time for authorities to act decisively,” he added.
NREB assured the public that investigations would be thorough and that they are determined to prevent future occurrences of such environmental mishaps.
