MIRI (Jan 7): A lorry carrying oil palm fruits was significantly damaged after catching fire near Ngu’s Junction in Batu Niah around noon today. Fortunately, the driver managed to escape unharmed.
Batu Niah Fire Station Chief Rary Binjie reported that the fire department received a distress call at 12.01pm. A team of five firefighters was immediately deployed to the location, approximately 16 kilometres from the station.
“Upon arrival, we discovered that a 17-tonne lorry carrying oil palm fruits was engulfed in flames,” Rary said in a statement.
The firefighters acted swiftly, managing to bring the fire under control by 12.25pm. However, it took nearly an hour more to fully extinguish the fire, with operations concluding at 1.20pm.
No injuries were reported during the incident, and investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the fire.
This incident serves as a reminder for lorry operators transporting goods to ensure vehicles are well-maintained and equipped with fire safety measures.
