Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian commended MBKS for being the first council in Sarawak to roll out this initiative. He encouraged all 24 local councils in the state to adopt similar measures, noting that 16 councils have already implemented bodycams, albeit with differing systems.

“Today’s launch serves as a model for other councils. MBKS’s year-long preparation demonstrates careful planning and budget management to implement this initiative effectively,” Dr Sim stated during the launch event.

The MBKS initiative deploys 10 body cameras to ensure accountability and provide impartial records of officer interactions. Dr Sim highlighted several benefits, including fostering public trust, reducing complaints, and protecting officers against false allegations.

“These cameras offer critical legal evidence, streamline investigations, and encourage respectful interactions. They also reduce the use of force and improve overall operational efficiency,” he added.

Addressing privacy concerns, Dr Sim assured that the cameras are designed to protect both residents and enforcement officers, providing objective accounts of incidents.

The initiative aligns with Sarawak’s broader vision of digital transformation and Smart City development. Dr Sim noted that 60-70 per cent of Kuching’s traffic lights are already equipped with smart technology, signaling the state’s commitment to innovation.

“Becoming a Smart City is not just about technology; it’s about creating a safer, more sustainable, and people-centered urban environment. This bodycam initiative is a step toward building a better Kuching for all,” Dr Sim concluded.

The launch event was attended by Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng and other MBKS officials.
