The families of the five victims who tragically lost their lives in the Miri landslide will receive financial assistance totalling RM50,000 from the Sarawak government. The announcement was made by Sarawak’s Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, who also chairs the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC).
The landslide, which struck Kampung Lereng Bukit in Miri at 2.50am on January 29, claimed the lives of five individuals: Fatimah Dawi, 71; Sazarena Arabi, 41; two young girls, Nur Raisyah Syahirah, 8, and Nur Rania Syafiqah, 11; and a teenage boy, Irsyad Syairah, 16.
During a press conference at the temporary evacuation centre at SJK(C) Chung Hua Batu Kawa, Uggah stated that each victim’s family would receive RM10,000 to help ease their financial burden during this difficult time.

In addition to financial aid, emotional support will also be provided to the survivors and affected families. Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah, Sarawak’s Minister of Women, Childhood, and Community Well-being Development, emphasized the importance of mental and emotional recovery.
“This tragedy has left a deep impact on the surviving family members, and they may face emotional distress. The Social Welfare Department (JKM) will send counselors to assist them in coping with their grief,” she said.
The press conference was also attended by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali, Lingga assemblywoman Dayang Noorazah Awang Sohor, and Political Secretary to the Sarawak Premier, Kho Teck Wan.
The landslide has shocked the community, and the Sarawak government’s swift response aims to provide both financial and emotional relief to those affected.
